While East Devon doesn’t experience the same surf that the northern beaches enjoy, conditions on Lyme Bay are perfect for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and can be excellent for windsurfing and kite surfing if conditions are right. Seaton now has a specialist SUP and watersports company – Seaton Bay Watersports – offering skills sessions, board hire and surfaris along the coast.
Winds from the southwest and southeast are ideal for wind and kite surfing in Seaton Bay, but you can catch an easterly or a westerly too. All surfers should be aware that Seaton’s shore dump can be severe at high tide, and that conditions are best for a few hours either side of the low tide. SUPers might like to have a crack at paddling up the River Axe too, but caution should be exercised at the river mouth, where conditions change rapidly and boats are coming in and out of the harbour.
